The Diocese of Tyler was created December 12, 1986

Erected on February 24, 1987

Tyler's first bishop was Most Rev. Charles E. Herzig, D.D. A native of San Antonio TX, Bishop Herzig was born August 14, 1929 and was ordained to the priesthood on May 31, 1955; appointed Bishop of Tyler December 12, 1986 and ordained Bishop of Tyler on February 24, 1987. Bishop Herzig died September 7, 1991.

The second bishop was Most Rev. Edmond Carmody, D.D.  A native of Ireland and a priest of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.  He served as Auxilary Bishop in San Antonio following a period of missionary work in Equidor with the St. James Society.  In 1992 he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Tyler.  March 17, 2000 he was transfered to the Diocese of Corpus Christi in Texas where he served until his retirement on January 18, 2010. Bishop Carmody lives in Corpus Christi and remains active in the diocese there.

On December 5, 2000 His Holiness John Paul II appointed Most Rev. Bishop Alvaro Corrada del Rio, S.J., third Bishop of the Diocese of Tyler, Texas. His installation took place in Tyler on the 30th of January 2001. 

The Diocese of Tyler was made part of the new ecclesiastic province of Galveston-Houston on December 29, 2004.

On July 6, 2011 His Holiness Benedict XVI named Bishop Corrada as the second bishop of the Diocese of Mayaguez in Puerto  Rico.  Bishop Corrada was installed as Bishop of Mayaquez on September 12, 2011.  At that time the Diocese of Tyler became Sede Vacante, that is without a diocesan bishop. Pope Benedict XVI has choosen to appoint Bishop Corrada as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Tyler.  He will administer the Diocese of Tyler until a new diocesan bishop is appointed.  Bishop Corrada will make occassional trips to Tyler until there is a new diocesan bishop.
